Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) said it will construct a gas plant at its Moneefa oilfield to pump one billion cubic feet per day (cfd) of gas. The plant would process gas from the company's recently discovered offshore gas fields, Arabiyah and Hasbah. Expansion of the Arabiyah and Hasbah gas fields, which are not linked with oil production, would provide around 1.8 billion cubic feet per day of gas.
The Arabiyah-1 well was tested and flowed 41.1 million cfd and the Hasbah-16 well was tested and flowed 62.1 million cfd.
To meet soaring demand for gas, Saudi Aramco is hurrying the expansion of fields non-associated with oil as it has to stick to its present output of eight million bpd to match the plunge in oil demand.
The company began developing Karan, its first non-associated offshore gas field project when it gave contracts in February 2009.
In April 2009, Saudi Aramco announced it had held up the development of its Moneefa offshore oilfield project by a minimum of six months. This would push the launch of the offshore oil project to 2012 from the original schedule of mid-2011. This may currently be moved forward.
